18 SOCIAL HOUSING, NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION AND GARAGES IN COSLADA, MADRID
The Project of Coslada comes from a competition organized by the Municipal Housing Company and it is materialized when we invented an order that didn’t exist.
The Residents Association of the neighborhood of La Cañada occupied the ground floor of an industrial building in a precarious condition where English courses were taught, sevillanas were held, theatre was performed... The proposal was to preserve them the space they already had and make a new local, classrooms, auditorium, air conditioning ... with the precaution that the potential building area of the upper floors was to build public housing relocation units and the creating an outdoor public space.
The houses, with an independent access from the local, are distributed from a courtyard, large enough for the sun to enter. The predominant type is the duplex in one floor and a half, combined with another duplex whose access is two floors above. The galvanized perforated metal plates and the expressive sincerity of the facilities dominate the courtyard.
The outside facades of the building sought to express their dual condition of Neighborhood Association and residential building; the hand-made anodized aluminum sheet is combined with two-tone gray bricks. The first, used in fixed panels and slats, provides the south side, where access to the Association is, with finish and scale of a public building; the second, alongside with the domestic scale holes, give the residential character to the rest of facades.
